Why the Disc Trucker became an icon

The Disc Trucker is not the kind of bike that tries to impress you on the first ride.

It is not the lightest.

It is not the fastest.

It is not the bike that makes everyone stop and stare outside the café.

You learn to appreciate it after thousands of kilometres.

Because that is when you realise:

  • it never wears you out;
  • it remains stable even when fully loaded;
  • it requires very little maintenance;
  • it simply keeps doing exactly what it was built to do.

In many ways, it is the opposite of today's trend-driven bicycles.

And that is precisely why it has become one of the most respected touring platforms of the past two decades.

Why choose the 700C version

Choosing between 26" and 700C wheels is not about one being better than the other.

They are simply two interpretations of the same touring philosophy.

The Disc Trucker 700C prioritises efficiency and smooth rolling over long distances.

The larger wheels carry momentum more easily, feel at home on paved roads and smooth gravel, and make long days in the saddle particularly enjoyable.

For many European touring cyclists, they still represent the most natural choice.

Built for touring

Every detail of the Disc Trucker has been designed with long-distance travel in mind.

The frame includes everything needed to build a truly self-sufficient touring bike:

  • internal dynamo cable routing;
  • Three-Pack mounts on the fork;
  • full compatibility with front and rear racks;
  • mudguard mounts;
  • three bottle cage mounts on the frame;
  • 12 mm thru-axles;
  • Flat Mount disc brakes;
  • clearance for tyres up to 700×47 mm.

These may seem like small details during a quick test ride.

After hundreds of kilometres on the road, they become essential.

A drivetrain designed for the real world

The Shimano Sora 3×9 drivetrain may seem understated compared to newer groupsets.

In reality, it remains one of the most popular choices among experienced touring cyclists.

The triple chainset provides closely spaced gear ratios while offering a gear range that many modern drivetrains still struggle to match.

Replacement parts are readily available almost anywhere, and servicing remains straightforward even during extended tours.

The TRP Spyre mechanical disc brakes are also highly valued by riders tackling expeditions or long-distance journeys far from specialist bike shops.

A platform built to evolve

Like the best Surly bikes, the Disc Trucker rarely stays exactly as it left the factory.

Some riders add a dynamo hub.

Others build a dedicated wheelset for extended expeditions.

Some eventually fit a Brooks saddle after a few thousand kilometres.

Others update the cockpit or refine their luggage system.

The bike evolves together with its owner.

That is also why so many riders keep using it for tens of thousands of kilometres.

  • traditional bicycle touring;
  • multi-day and multi-month adventures;
  • long-distance commuting;

  • a reliable, straightforward bike built to last.

FAQ

Is the Disc Trucker suitable for gravel riding?

Yes. It is primarily designed for paved roads and gravel roads, but it also handles smooth dirt roads and forest tracks with confidence, especially when fitted with appropriate tyres.

Why choose the 700C version instead of the 26" model?

700C wheels prioritise rolling efficiency and comfort over long distances. The 26" version still offers advantages in terms of spare parts availability in certain regions of the world and slightly better manoeuvrability with heavy loads.

Are mechanical disc brakes still a good choice?

For many touring cyclists, absolutely. TRP Spyre brakes are reliable, easy to adjust and straightforward to maintain, even during long journeys far from specialist bike shops.

Can I fit a dynamo hub?

Yes. The fork already features internal dynamo cable routing and all the mounts required for a dedicated long-distance touring setup.

Can I fit both front and rear racks?

Yes. Both the frame and fork are purpose-built for loaded touring and include numerous mounting points for racks, mudguards and accessories.
