The bike born for one of cycling's toughest adventures

If the Fargo represents one of the origins of the modern drop-bar mountain bike, the Cutthroat represents its faster evolution.

Salsa developed the Cutthroat while studying one of North America's most iconic endurance events: the Tour Divide, more than 4,000 kilometres along the Great Divide Mountain Bike Route between Canada and New Mexico. A route combining fast gravel roads, remote tracks, long days in the saddle and often unpredictable conditions.

The goal was not to create a more aggressive gravel bike or a lighter mountain bike. The goal was to build a bicycle capable of maintaining speed, comfort and control for consecutive days across mixed terrain.

That is how the Cutthroat was born.

A carbon platform designed specifically for long-distance bikepacking, featuring drop-bar mountain bike geometry, substantial cargo capacity and a vibration-damping character that remains one of its defining traits.

Carbon, comfort and endurance for long distances

The Cutthroat frame uses high-modulus carbon fibres and Salsa's proprietary Class 5™ Vibration Reduction System.

The slender curved seatstays work together with the chainstays to absorb part of the vibrations generated by rough terrain without compromising pedalling efficiency.

The result is not a "soft" bicycle but a platform that reduces accumulated fatigue during very long days on gravel roads, forest tracks and secondary roads.

It is a characteristic that can be difficult to appreciate during a short test ride but becomes immediately evident when the hours in the saddle begin to add up.

A platform designed to evolve

The Cutthroat was designed from the beginning as a frame intended for very different configurations.

The frame supports 1x and 2x drivetrains, dropper posts, dynamo hubs, racks, bikepacking luggage and multiple approaches to bike building.

SRAM UDH compatibility also makes replacement hangers easier to source while travelling and expands future drivetrain possibilities.

It is not a closed platform.

It is a frame designed to evolve alongside the rider's project over time.

Smart cargo, not unnecessary weight

The Cutthroat was designed to carry what is necessary and nothing more.

Its numerous mounting points allow the installation of frame bags, top tube bags, hydration systems, Anything Cages and accessories intended for long-distance travel.

The Cutthroat Carbon Deluxe fork features Three-Pack mounts on both legs, internal routing for dynamo-powered lighting systems and abrasion-resistant protection in areas most exposed to mud and debris.

Every detail reflects the experience Salsa has accumulated through years of involvement in North American ultra-distance riding and bikepacking.

Not a gravel bike. Not a traditional mountain bike.

The Cutthroat still occupies a category of its own.

Its geometry comes from the mountain bike world but has been specifically optimised for drop bars.

The 69° head angle, long wheelbase and 445 mm chainstays prioritise stability and predictability even when the bike is heavily loaded.

It is a bicycle designed to maintain control when fatigue increases, surfaces constantly change and the day simply refuses to end.

Bikejamming build ideas

The Cutthroat is one of the most versatile platforms available for riders who want a bicycle genuinely optimised around their project.

Examples include:

Ultra-distance and bikepacking races

  • SRAM AXS Transmission or Shimano GRX 1x drivetrain
  • Lightweight and reliable 29" wheelset
  • Setup focused on speed, efficiency and autonomy

Tour Divide and self-supported adventures

  • SON dynamo hub
  • Integrated permanent lighting
  • Robust wheels designed for easy maintenance and durability
  • Setup optimised for navigation, device charging and consecutive long days in the saddle

Long-distance off-road touring

  • 2x drivetrain or Rohloff hub
  • Gearing suited to heavy loads and long climbs
  • Expedition wheelsets prioritising reliability and field-serviceability

Adventure riding and mixed-terrain use

  • 29 x 2.2" tyres
  • Light and efficient configuration
  • Ideal for routes combining pavement, gravel roads and fast dirt tracks

The same Cutthroat can therefore become an ultra-endurance race bike, a long-distance off-road touring platform or a fast machine for mixed-surface exploration.

For this reason, we prefer to start from real-world use and build the configuration around the project rather than around a specific component.

The frameset is only the starting point.

Size guide

Size Suggested rider height
52 cm 154–168 cm
54 cm 168–175 cm
56 cm 173–185 cm
58 cm 183–193 cm
60 cm 190 cm+

Manufacturer recommendations should be considered a starting point. Body proportions, riding experience, riding style and intended use can all influence the final size choice.

For this reason, we are always available for personalised sizing advice.

FAQ

Can I run 29+ wheels on the Cutthroat?

No. The Cutthroat is designed around standard 29" wheels with tyre clearance up to 29 x 2.4" at the rear and up to 29 x 3.0" at the front. It is not compatible with 29+ configurations.

Can I use 27.5" / 650B wheels?

No. The Cutthroat geometry was developed specifically around 29" wheels. Using 27.5" wheels significantly alters the intended handling characteristics of the frame.

Can I install a flat handlebar?

Technically yes, but the Cutthroat was designed as a drop-bar mountain bike. Switching to a flat handlebar results in a much shorter effective cockpit compared to a conventional mountain bike.

Can I fit a suspension fork?

Yes. The frame is compatible with suspension forks offering 100 mm of travel and an axle-to-crown height of up to 506 mm.

Can I use a dropper post?

Yes. The frame supports dropper posts with either internal or external cable routing.

Can I install a rear rack?

Yes. The Cutthroat is compatible with rear racks. Salsa rack models require the Salsa Rack-Lock seatpost collar.

Is it compatible with a dynamo hub?

Yes. The Cutthroat Carbon Deluxe fork includes internal routing for dynamo-powered lighting systems.

Can I build a Rohloff-equipped Cutthroat?

Technically yes, as part of a custom project. Contact us to discuss compatibility, component selection and the overall build.

Is it suitable for heavily loaded touring?

Yes, provided the build is coherent with the intended use. The Cutthroat was created for bikepacking and ultra-distance riding but can also be configured for long-term travel with more comprehensive equipment.
