Salsa Fargo Frameset New Generation UDH

The Salsa Fargo Frameset New Generation UDH is a steel frameset with Cutthroat Carbon Deluxe fork, designed to build a drop-bar MTB for off-road bikepacking, dirt-road touring and expedition use.

When people talk about bikepacking, drop-bar MTBs or long-distance off-road travel today, it is easy to forget that many of the solutions now considered normal were first explored on the Fargo when these categories did not really exist yet.

Salsa introduced the Fargo in 2009, years before the explosion of modern bikepacking. The idea was simple: to create a bike capable of combining the multiple hand positions of a drop handlebar with the load capacity, tyre clearance and stability of a travel mountain bike.

This new generation updates the platform without changing its meaning: Fargo remains one of the most coherent bases for riders who want to build an off-road travel bike truly configured around their own use.

What changes in the new generation

It is not just a new colour.

The Peat Moss version introduces relevant technical updates compared with previous Fargo Framesets still available on the market.

  • UDH compatibility via the new drive-side Alternator plate.
  • Alternator 1.0 Flat Mount on the non-drive side.
  • Flat Mount brakes front and rear.
  • Cutthroat Carbon Deluxe fork with abrasion-resistant plates in the most exposed areas.
  • Updated geometry, now declared with 462 mm chainstays.

For anyone comparing this frameset with previous versions, this is the key point: the new Fargo Frameset UDH is not just a colour update, but a more modern and more interesting platform for future builds.

Why Fargo still makes sense

Over the years the market has seen increasingly capable gravel bikes, rigid bikepacking hardtails and adventure frames of every kind. And yet Fargo still occupies a very specific space.

It is not an extreme gravel bike, and it is not an adapted mountain bike. It is a drop-bar mountain bike designed from the start to cover long distances on varied surfaces, with luggage, multiple hand positions and predictable geometry even when the ground gets rougher.

  • More stable and more load-ready than a classic gravel bike.
  • More efficient on long transfers than a flat-bar MTB.
  • More adaptable than a traditional touring bike when dirt becomes continuous.
  • More interesting than many modern frames if you want a truly evolutive platform.

The value of the Fargo lies in the continuity of the project: a bike designed to be used, updated and reinterpreted over the years.

Starting from the frameset

Choosing a Fargo frameset instead of a complete bike means deciding from the start on wheels, drivetrain, cockpit, brakes and load capacity according to your real use.

This approach makes particular sense when the bike has to become a precise tool: long-distance travel, technical bikepacking, heavy commuting, loaded expeditions or mixed gravel/off-road use. Just to give a few examples:

  • Europe / North America touring: 2x drivetrain, robust wheels and SON dynamo hub for lighting autonomy.
  • Remote expedition: Rohloff, robust rim, reliable spoke build and SON dynamo hub.
  • Light technical bikepacking: 1x12 drivetrain, lighter wheels and fast-rolling but controllable tyres.
  • Heavy commuting + travel: Rohloff, dynamo and components selected for repeated year-round use.
  • Mixed gravel/off-road use: 29 x 2.2" or 29 x 2.4" setup with a lighter and more versatile build.

This is why we prefer to start from real use and build the configuration around the project, not around a single component.

Cutthroat Carbon Deluxe

The frameset includes the Cutthroat Carbon Deluxe fork, a carbon fork developed for mixed surfaces and unpredictable conditions.

Compared with a purely gravel-oriented fork, it follows a more travel-focused logic: generous tyre compatibility, cargo mounts, low-rider support and abrasion-resistant plates in the areas most exposed to wear.

  • Carbon construction.
  • 483 mm axle-to-crown.
  • 51 mm offset.
  • Boost 110 mm front spacing.
  • Three-Pack mounts on each fork leg.
  • Low-rider compatibility with Salsa Down Under rack.
  • Tyre compatibility up to 29 x 3.0".

Alternator, UDH and configurations

The new Fargo uses Alternator 1.0 Flat Mount dropouts with UDH compatibility. This is one of the most important differences compared with previous versions.

The Alternator system makes it possible to work with rear standards, drivetrains and the behaviour of the bike. UDH compatibility adds a more modern and more understandable base for future builds and replacement parts.

  • Traditional derailleur drivetrain.
  • Singlespeed with dedicated components.
  • Rohloff with the appropriate configuration.
  • Gates Belt Drive with compatible drivetrain.
  • Possibility to work with 148 mm Boost, 142 mm thru-axle or 135 mm QR using dedicated plates.
  • Adjustable rear end: shorter for a more compact feel, longer for more stability under load.

Wheels, tyres and builds

The Fargo is designed around high-volume wheels and tyres. The frame accepts 29" tyres up to 3.0" on sizes S–XL, while size XS goes up to 29 x 2.6". All sizes are compatible with 27.5" tyres up to 3.0".

This freedom is not about fitting the largest possible tyre in every situation, but about choosing the behaviour of the bike according to the trip.

  • 29 x 2.2" / 2.4": fast and versatile configuration for mixed gravel/off-road use.
  • 29+: more volume, traction and absorption for rougher terrain.
  • 27.5 x 3.0": recommended alternative to maintain coherent geometry while increasing comfort.
  • Expedition wheels: robust rims, reliable spoke build and choices consistent with load and terrain.
  • SON or Shutter Precision dynamo hub: useful option for lighting autonomy and long trips.

A travel wheel should not simply “fit”: it must keep working well when the bike is loaded, the surface gets worse and the hours in the saddle increase.

Ideal for

  • Building a drop-bar MTB for off-road bikepacking.
  • Dirt-road travel and remote routes.
  • Expedition builds with real load.
  • Rohloff, singlespeed or Gates Belt Drive configurations.
  • Wheels with SON or Shutter Precision dynamo hub.
  • Riders looking for an evolutive frameset, not a closed build.

When it is not the right choice

  • If you are looking for a light and fast gravel frameset for sport riding.
  • If you want a modern flat-bar MTB for trail riding.
  • If your use is almost entirely asphalt and traditional touring.
  • If you prefer a complete bike already defined, without thinking through configuration and components.

Fargo Frameset UDH makes sense when you want to build a bike consistent with a precise project, not simply assemble components onto an iconic frame.

Size guide

Size indications are approximate. Height, inseam, saddle height, body proportions and riding preferences can all influence the final choice.

  • XS: 147–160 cm
  • S: 157–170 cm
  • M: 168–180 cm
  • L: 178–191 cm
  • XL: 188–201 cm

If you are between two sizes, the choice depends on the riding position and handling you want: a larger size tends to feel more stable and stretched, while a smaller size feels more compact and easier to handle.
