Why choose this rack

The Old Man Mountain Elkhorn Tall is a 6061 aluminum rack designed for bikepacking and light loads on bikes with 29" wheels, where extra clearance is needed for wide tires, mud, and real off-road use. It can be used both front and rear and is built to work with cargo cages, bottles, dry bags, and modular systems—not with traditional panniers.

Compared to the Short version, the Tall is designed for tires up to 29 x 3.25" and to maximize clearance. It is therefore the right choice when the bike is actually used in MTB environments, with modern forks and on routes where mud, debris, and tire volume matter.

Its design philosophy remains that of the Elkhorn: lightweight structure, 3-pack mounts on the uprights, and a top platform with multiple mounting points, for a stable and modular bikepacking setup.

To better understand the differences between cargo cages, panniers, and hybrid systems, you can read our bike touring load systems guide.

  • compatible with thru axle or quick release bikes via dedicated Fit Kit

Thru axle compatibility

The Elkhorn Tall can be mounted on a thru axle using a dedicated Fit Kit. This allows the rack to be used on many modern MTBs and forks not originally designed for racks.

Fit Kit and compatibility

  • a specific Fit Kit may be required for bikes with thru axles or without mounts
  • Fit Kit is NOT included
  • compatibility depends on frame, axle, and bike standards
  • the Fit Kit allows mounting the rack directly on the wheel axle

After your order, we will contact you via email to verify compatibility and provide the correct Fit Kit if needed.

If your bike is already set up for direct mounting (eyelets), you can indicate this in the order notes.

Not compatible with

  • use with traditional panniers as the main setup
  • configurations requiring heavy touring loads

Real-world limits

  • declared load capacity: 11.34 kg
  • not designed as a traditional pannier rack
  • actual clearance must be maintained for mud and debris
  • height from mounting point to deck: reported between 403 mm and 430 mm depending on source; always verify actual clearance on your bike

Useful specs

  • structure tube diameter: 13 mm
  • top platform: 100 x 266 mm
  • declared weight: 652 g with 6" extenders
  • lifetime warranty

Important note:

The Elkhorn Tall should be considered a slim, modular bikepacking rack, prioritizing clearance and compatibility with large tires. It does not replace a traditional touring rack for panniers.

When it makes sense

  • you use a 29" MTB or a bike that requires high tire clearance
  • you want to mount cargo cages, bottles, dry bags, or modular systems on fork or rear
  • you do off-road bikepacking with wide tires and routes where mud and debris really matter
  • you are looking for a lightweight and stable rack without moving to a heavy touring setup

When it does NOT make sense

  • you want to use traditional panniers as your main setup
  • you need medium to heavy touring load capacity
  • your bike is better suited to the Short version based on wheel size and mounting height

Recommended setups

Main use

Typical pairings

  • MTB fork with light load and increased clearance
  • light rear setup on 29er
  • hybrid systems with frame bags and handlebar bags

What it carries best

  • compact dry bags
  • light modular bags
  • water, fuel, lightweight gear

On a front fork, it makes sense to keep the load limited and well distributed. To learn more, you can read our guide to front loading on touring bikes.

Technical notes / limitations

  • compatibility must be verified based on frame and axle
  • Fit Kit is not included
  • not designed for traditional panniers
  • the choice between Short and Tall depends on wheel size, tire width, mounting height, and actual required clearance

Notes from relevant external sources

It is appreciated for:

  • increased space for wide tires and mud
  • front / rear versatility
  • integrated 3-pack mounts
