Why choose this rack

The Tubus Grand Expedition Front is designed to overcome a key limitation of traditional lowriders: the lack of space for bulky loads at the front.

It integrates two functions into a single structure:

  • low pannier position → improved riding stability
  • upper platform → carrying bulky items

This configuration makes it particularly suitable for trips where total load volume is high and cannot be fully distributed between front and rear panniers.

The 12 mm tubing and 3-point mounting system are designed to handle loads in a stable and controlled way.

To better understand when fork load becomes an issue, refer to our guide on front-end loading.

Compatibility

Bike type

  • trekking / touring
  • travel bikes
  • gravel with rigid fork and rack mounts

Mounting system

  • fork-mounted via eyelets (threaded mounts)
  • 3-point mounting system

Not compatible with

  • suspension forks
  • carbon forks without rack mounts
  • forks without threaded eyelets

Real-world limits

max load 18 kg
tire clearance up to approx. 50 mm
fender clearance up to approx. 60 mm
fork mount spacing 144 – 154 mm

Wheel & tire compatibility

Compatible with 26" and 28" wheels (in most cases also usable on 29", subject to clearance and fork geometry); always verify real space between rack, fork, and fenders.

Position

  • front

Important note:
The fork must be designed to support a rack. Otherwise, installation may compromise safety and structural integrity.

When it makes sense

The Tubus Grand Expedition Front is a good choice if:

  • total load volume is high
  • you need additional space above the front wheel
  • you use both panniers and bulky items (e.g. sleeping pad, sleeping bag)
  • you are building a full expedition setup

It is a coherent solution for long trips and scenarios where volume management is critical.

When it does NOT make sense

  • light or medium touring
  • bikepacking setups
  • simple configurations with panniers only
  • when load can be managed without an upper platform

In these cases, a rack like Tubus Tara stainless steel is more appropriate.

Primary use

  • front panniers + top load

It allows combining stability (lowrider layout) with additional carrying capacity.

Typical pairings

  • with Tubus Cargo Evo → full expedition setup
  • with front panniers + bulky gear on top

Best for carrying

mixed loads:

  • panniers
  • bulky items (tent, sleeping pad)

FAQ – Tubus Grand Expedition Front

Is it compatible with bikes without eyelets?

No, it requires threaded mounts on the fork.

How much weight can it carry?

Up to 18 kg, as stated by the manufacturer.

Is it suitable for off-road use?

Yes, on gravel and dirt roads with appropriate setups.

Is it compatible with suspension forks?

No.

Technical notes / considerations

  • bulkier structure compared to traditional lowriders
  • requires careful load distribution
  • not compatible with child seats

Notes from external sources

Front racks with an upper platform are used in expedition setups where load volume is high.

They are appreciated for:

  • increased carrying capacity
  • ability to handle bulky items

In real-world use, they represent a more niche solution compared to traditional lowriders, but are effective in demanding travel scenarios.
