Why choose this rack

The Old Man Mountain Elkhorn Short is a 6061 aluminum bike rack designed for bikepacking and light loads on gravel bikes, lightweight MTBs, and modern touring bikes. It can be used both front and rear and is designed to work with cargo cages, bottles, dry bags, and modular systems, not with traditional panniers.

Its logic is different from that of a classic touring rack like the Divide: here the focus is on load stability, low weight, and modularity, with 3-pack mounts on the uprights and multiple attachment points on the platform.

It is a very interesting solution when you want to add carrying capacity without turning your bike into a heavy touring setup.

To better understand the differences between panniers, cargo cages, and hybrid systems, you can read our guide to load systems for touring bikes.

Thru axle frame compatibility

The Elkhorn Short can be mounted on a thru axle using a dedicated Fit Kit. This makes it possible to use the rack on many modern bikes that were not originally designed for rack mounting.

Fit Kit and compatibility

  • on bikes with a thru axle or without mounts, a specific Fit Kit may be required
  • the Fit Kit is NOT included
  • compatibility depends on the frame, axle, and bike standard
  • the Fit Kit allows the rack to be mounted directly on the wheel axle

After your order, we will contact you by email to verify compatibility and provide the correct Fit Kit if needed.

If your bike is already set up for direct mounting (eyelets), you can mention this in the order notes.

Not compatible with

  • use with traditional panniers as the main function
  • setups requiring heavy loads for classic touring

Real limits

  • declared load capacity: 11.34 kg
  • it is not designed as a traditional pannier rack
  • real clearance must be left for mud and debris

  • top platform: 161 x 266 mm
  • claimed weight: 623 g with 6" extenders
  • lifetime warranty

Important note:

The Elkhorn Short is a slim, modular rack. It should be understood as a support for cargo cages, bottles, dry bags, and bikepacking systems, not as a replacement for a heavy-duty touring rack.

When it makes sense

  • you want to add carrying capacity to a bikepacking bike without moving to a classic touring setup
  • you use cargo cages, Hemlock-style bags, or light loads on the fork or rear
  • you are looking for a stable, lightweight rack for gravel, MTB, or full suspension bikes
  • you want to keep handling cleaner compared to high or poorly controlled loads

When it does NOT make sense

  • you want to use traditional panniers as your main setup
  • you need medium to heavy touring loads
  • you are looking for an expedition rack

Recommended setups

Main use

Typical combinations

  • bikepacking fork with a light load
  • light rear setup on gravel or MTB
  • hybrid systems with frame bags and handlebar bags

What it carries best

  • compact dry bags
  • light modular bags
  • water, fuel, and light gear

With the Elkhorn Short, it makes sense to think in terms of modular bikepacking, not classic pannier-based touring.

FAQ – frequently asked questions about Old Man Mountain Elkhorn Short

Is it front or rear?

Both. The Elkhorn Short can be mounted either at the front or at the rear.

Is it suitable for traditional panniers?

No. The manufacturer describes it as a rack not designed for traditional panniers. For that type of use, it is more appropriate to look at the Divide or Divide XL / Fat.

Which wheel sizes does the Short version cover?

It is designed for 27.5" and 700C wheels, with tires up to 27.5 x 2.8" or 700C x 50 mm.

Do I always need the Fit Kit?

No. It is only needed if the bike does not have compatible eyelets or if you want to mount it on the axle.

How much weight can it really carry?

The manufacturer’s declared load capacity is 11.34 kg.

Is it suitable for full suspension bikes?

Yes. One of its key strengths is the possibility of using it on many modern bikes, including full suspension models, subject to real compatibility verification.

Technical notes / limitations

  • compatibility must be checked based on frame and axle
  • the Fit Kit is not included
  • not designed for traditional panniers
  • the choice between Short and Tall depends on wheel size, tire size, and actual clearance required
