The Ritchey Outback is a frameset designed for travel-oriented gravel riding, bikepacking and dirt-road touring. It’s a platform developed to handle mixed terrain, long days in the saddle and loaded configurations, while maintaining stability and control when conditions become demanding.
Independent reviews consistently highlight the Outback’s balance between comfort and precision, its predictable handling on rough surfaces, and a geometry that works equally well when fully loaded or in lighter, more agile setups. It’s not an extreme frame, but a coherent tool for riders who cover serious distances on varied terrain.
The frame is built from triple-butted, heat-treated Ritchey Logic steel tubing and TIG welded to Tom Ritchey’s specifications. An EPD Coat treatment improves corrosion resistance, an important detail for riders travelling in variable weather or on long-distance routes.
The tapered head tube (1-1/8" – 1-1/2") is designed to work with modern forks and ensures precise steering even with front-end load. The 27.2 mm seatpost standard contributes to long-distance comfort, a characteristic often noted in both gravel and adventure-focused reviews.
The Outback offers a complete and practical mounting layout:
3 bottle cage mounts on the frame
Fender mounts
Rear rack mounts
This makes the frameset suitable both for minimalist gravel builds and for more traditional, fully equipped travel setups.
Bottom bracket: 68 mm, English threaded (BSA)
Drivetrain compatibility: 1x and 2x
Front derailleur support: brazed-on
Seatpost diameter: 27.2 mm
Headset: tapered (not included)
Axles: thru-axle
Brakes: disc, flat mount
The frameset includes the Ritchey Comp Carbon Adventure Fork, designed specifically for gravel and adventure use.
Key features:
Tapered steerer
Thru-axle compatibility
Accessory mounts on fork legs
Flat mount disc brake compatibility
Internal cable routing through the fork
The internal cable routing is especially appreciated by travel-focused riders, as it reduces exposure to mud and external elements while contributing to a cleaner, more reliable setup over time.
The Outback supports a wide range of configurations:
700c wheels: tire clearance up to 48 mm
650b wheels: tire clearance up to 2.0"
This allows riders to choose a faster, smoother setup with 700c wheels or a more stable and comfortable configuration with 650b and high-volume tires, depending on terrain and load.
The Outback’s geometry is clearly oriented toward off-road stability and control when loaded. Independent reviews often point out its predictable handling, confident descending on rough terrain, and a riding position that remains comfortable over many hours.
The progressive stack and reach values allow the bike to be set up either for a more performance-oriented gravel position or for a relaxed, travel-focused posture.
If you’re unsure about size selection or want to compare the geometry with a bike you already ride, we’re happy to go through the numbers together before purchase.
The Ritchey Outback is well suited for:
Gravel riding on mixed terrain
Bikepacking
Dirt-road touring
Multi-day travel with bags and accessories
It’s a platform built for riders who value reliability, coherent design and real-world versatility over trends or technical extremes.
