The Cutthroat for the perfectionist
The Salsa Cutthroat Rival GX AXS represents the most refined version of the Cutthroat family.
It shares the renowned carbon frame with Class 5 VRS technology and the drop-bar mountain bike geometry that have made the Cutthroat one of the benchmark platforms in endurance bikepacking, while pairing them with premium components for riders seeking maximum performance, precision and reliability.
Designed for ultra-distance events, self-supported off-road crossings and long-range adventure travel, it combines the proven Cutthroat platform with a SRAM GX Eagle Transmission drivetrain and DT Swiss X1900 wheels, creating one of the most complete Cutthroat builds Salsa has ever offered.
Carbon, comfort and long-distance riding
The Cutthroat platform was born from the experience gained on the Tour Divide, one of the most iconic bikepacking events in the world.
The high-modulus carbon frame incorporates the Class 5 VRS (Vibration Reduction System), using specially engineered seatstays to absorb part of the vibration generated by rough terrain without compromising steering precision or pedalling efficiency.
The result is a bike that remains efficient even after many consecutive hours in the saddle, when comfort and fatigue reduction become increasingly important.
SRAM Rival GX Eagle AXS Transmission
The Rival GX AXS is the most performance-oriented build currently available within the non-suspended Cutthroat range.
The drivetrain combines:
SRAM Rival AXS D2 controls
SRAM GX Eagle AXS Transmission rear derailleur
SRAM XG-1275 10-52 cassette
T-Type Transmission technology
The system delivers exceptionally precise shifting even under load and offers a gear range perfectly suited to long gravel climbs, heavily loaded bikepacking trips and mountainous terrain.
SRAM UDH compatibility further enhances durability and makes long-term maintenance simpler and more practical.
DT Swiss X1900: the real upgrade
Compared to the Apex AXS version, the most significant difference is not the drivetrain but the wheelset.
The Cutthroat Rival GX AXS is equipped with DT Swiss X1900 Spline wheels, one of the most respected wheelsets in the trail, adventure and bikepacking world thanks to their durability, reliability and ease of maintenance.
For many riders, this represents a more meaningful upgrade than the jump from Apex to Rival controls alone.
Dropper post as standard
Like the Apex AXS model, this version comes equipped with a 90 mm TranzX dropper post.
On technical terrain it improves control and confidence on descents, making the Cutthroat surprisingly capable when the route becomes more demanding.
Who is the Cutthroat Rival GX AXS for?
The Rival GX AXS is designed for riders who already know exactly what they want.
It is particularly well suited to:
ultra-distance events
the Tour Divide and similar routes
demanding off-road bikepacking
year-round intensive use
riders looking for a bike that is already close to their ideal final build
If the GRX 610 is the explorer's Cutthroat and the Apex AXS the adventurer's Cutthroat, the Rival GX AXS is the perfectionist's Cutthroat.

FAQ
