The Salsa Fargo Apex 1 is a steel drop bar mountain bike designed for off-road bikepacking, continuous dirt-road riding and mixed-terrain travel with real cargo.
When we talk about bikepacking, drop bar MTBs or long-distance off-road travel today, it is easy to forget that many ideas now considered normal were already being explored on the Fargo before those categories truly existed.
Salsa introduced the Fargo in 2009, years before the modern bikepacking boom. The idea was simple: create a bicycle that could combine the multiple hand positions of a drop handlebar with the carrying capacity, tyre clearance and stability of a travel-oriented mountain bike.
More than fifteen years later, Fargo still occupies a category of its own.
Why Fargo still makes sense
Over the years, gravel bikes have become more capable and mountain bikes more versatile. Yet Fargo still sits in a very specific space.
It is not a fast gravel bike built to maximise speed on smooth dirt roads. It is not a modern MTB adapted to a drop handlebar either. Fargo is for riders covering many kilometres across different surfaces, with or without cargo, where stability, comfort and long-term adaptability matter most.

Fargo Apex 1: simple, accessible platform
Over the years, Fargo has been built with mechanical drivetrains, electronic groupsets, Rohloff hubs, singlespeed setups and even belt-drive transmissions.
The Apex 1 is one of the simpler and more accessible interpretations of a platform that many riders continue to use and update for tens of thousands of kilometres.
The SRAM Apex 1x11 drivetrain offers a proven and intuitive setup, while the TRP Spyre-C mechanical disc brakes keep the bike simple and easy to manage: a feature still appreciated by riders who value low-maintenance setups and easier serviceability during long trips or far from specialist workshops.
The Firestarter Carbon 110 fork completes a build that remains faithful to the Fargo idea: functionality, versatility and real-world use.

One of Fargo’s defining features is the Alternator system, developed by Salsa to make the platform more adaptable over time.

No. It is more accurately described as a drop bar mountain bike: it uses a drop handlebar, but it is designed for high-volume tyres, real cargo and more demanding off-road routes than a traditional gravel bike.
What is the difference compared with the Fargo GRX 610?
The platform follows the same Fargo philosophy: steel frame, drop bar MTB geometry, broad versatility and Alternator Dropouts. The main difference is the build kit: Apex 1 uses a SRAM Apex 1x11 drivetrain and TRP Spyre-C mechanical brakes, while the GRX 610 uses Shimano GRX 1x12 and hydraulic brakes.
Are the TRP Spyre-C mechanical brakes suitable for travel?
Yes, when the use is coherent. They do not offer the same modulation as a modern hydraulic system, but they are simple to adjust, easy to maintain and easier to service when travelling far from specialist workshops.
Can I run 29+ tyres?
Yes, on sizes S–XL the Fargo is compatible with 29+ tyres up to 29 x 3.0". On size XS, 29+ is not intended due to toe-overlap concerns.
Can I use 27.5+ wheels?
Yes. Salsa recommends 27.5 x 3.0" to maintain appropriate geometry and increase comfort, traction and absorption on rough surfaces.
Can I fit a suspension fork?
Yes. The frame is designed for suspension forks with axle-to-crown length up to 511 mm, normally equivalent to around 100 mm of travel. The fork manufacturer’s specifications must always be respected.
Can I set it up with Rohloff, singlespeed or belt drive?
Yes, the Alternator platform allows geared, singlespeed, Rohloff and Gates Belt Drive setups with the appropriate components and plates.
