Positioning and use logic

The Croix de Fer 931 frameset represents the highest level of the Croix de Fer platform in terms of material and construction.

It is designed for advanced gravel builds, where the frame is not just a structure but an active part of the bike’s dynamic behaviour.

Compared with Reynolds 725 steel:

  • Greater stiffness
  • More immediate response
  • Superior corrosion resistance

It remains a versatile platform, but with a clearly more performance-oriented setup.

Material: Reynolds 931 (what really changes)

Reynolds 931 is a cold-worked stainless steel.

In practical terms, this means:

  • Greater stiffness at the same weight
  • Higher long-term durability
  • No need for anti-corrosion treatments

It is not “more comfortable” than 725:

  • It is more reactive
  • More direct under load
  • More stable under acceleration

It is a material that makes sense when the frame becomes an active part of the ride, not just a support structure.

Frame and platform

The project introduces distinctive features:

  • Tapered head tube → greater front-end stiffness
  • Carbon fork → lower weight + more precise handling
  • T47 bottom bracket → larger contact surface and wider compatibility

The result is a more modern platform than the 725, while still retaining Croix de Fer geometry:

  • 12x100 / 12x142 mm thru-axles
  • Tyre compatibility up to 47 mm

Build and compatibility

The frameset includes:

  • EC34 / EC44 headset
  • Seat clamp
  • Thru-axles

T47 bottom bracket:

  • Stiffer than BSA
  • Broad compatibility with modern groupsets

Compatibility:

  • 1x and 2x drivetrains
  • Dropper post
  • Modular internal cable routing

Wheels and tyres

Compatible with 700c wheels.

Tyre clearance up to 47 mm:

  • Full gravel setup
  • Or faster-rolling configurations (38–40 mm)

The platform allows marked changes in behaviour depending on the setup.

When it makes sense

  • For high-end builds on a steel platform.
  • For riders wanting a more reactive frame than the 725.
  • For intensive use, including over long distances.

When it does NOT make sense

  • It is not necessary for occasional use or basic commuting.
  • It is not the easiest or most forgiving choice in the range.
  • It is not designed for riders prioritising comfort over response.

Genesis Croix de Fer 931 Frameset FAQ

Is it lighter than the 725?

Not necessarily in any significant way. The advantage lies in response and durability, not in pure weight.

Is it more comfortable than the 725?

No. It is generally stiffer and more direct.

Does it make sense for bikepacking?

Yes, but it is more oriented toward active riding than the 725, which remains the more neutral platform.
