Ritchey Ultra Frame

The Ritchey Ultra is a steel hardtail frame designed for trail riding, real-world off-road, aggressive cross-country and all-mountain use, featuring modern geometry and a 120 mm suspension fork platform. It is a versatile, purpose-built chassis compatible with both 27.5" and 29" wheels, as well as 1x and 2x drivetrains, while maintaining a clean and functional design.

The Ultra is conceived as a versatile hardtail for riders who want a solid, predictable bike for long rides, varied terrain and custom builds, without chasing short-lived trends.

Construction highlights

WCS Logic Tubing
The frame is built using Ritchey’s proprietary WCS Logic steel tubing, triple-butted and heat-treated, developed specifically for the TIG welding process to Tom Ritchey’s specifications. The construction combines strength, ride quality and long-term durability while preserving the lively, compliant ride feel that defines Ritchey Logic tubing.

Technical trails and real-world use

The Ritchey Ultra is a true trail hardtail. Its geometry, 120 mm suspension fork, dropper post compatibility and ability to run either 29" or 27.5+ wheels make it well suited to singletrack, technical trails and lightweight trail bikepacking.

It is a purpose-built platform for routes where maintaining the control and handling characteristics of a mountain bike remains essential, even on long days in the saddle or when carrying a lightweight bikepacking setup.

Questions and Answers about the Ritchey Ultra

What’s the difference compared to the P-29er?

The Ultra is more trail-oriented: it’s designed around a 120 mm fork, offers more capability on rough terrain, and allows for a wider range of setups.

Is it an adventure frame?

First and foremost, it is a trail hardtail. While it can be configured for lightweight trail bikepacking and self-supported adventures, it is not designed as an expedition or touring bike.

Can I run 27.5 or 29 wheels?

Yes, it supports both, with different setup approaches.

What tire clearance does it support?

Up to 27.5×2.8 or 29×2.4 max.

Is 1x or 2x better?

Both are possible, but 2x requires Shimano Side Swing and is limited to 11-speed only.

Is it suitable for long-distance travel?

It can be used for lightweight trail bikepacking with bags mounted directly to the frame, handlebar and seatpost. For rack-based touring, heavier loads or extended self-supported travel, a purpose-built touring or expedition platform is the better choice.

Spare parts, headsets and build support

With frame purchase we provide access to:

    • original Ritchey spare parts
    • compatible Ritchey headsets
    • support for fork choice, drivetrain compatibility and full build planning

The Ritchey Ultra is designed around either a 120 mm Boost suspension fork or a rigid fork with a 500 mm axle-to-crown length. When converting to a rigid fork, steerer type, 15 × 110 mm Boost axle standard, brake mount and fork offset should also be verified for compatibility.

For Trail Adventure builds, technical bikepacking and off-road touring, we have selected three compatible forks, each with distinct characteristics.:

  • SEIDO TAZA → A carbon Trail Adventure fork with a 510 mm axle-to-crown length and a 51 mm offset. It is fully compatible but raises the front end slightly compared with Ritchey's 500 mm reference geometry, favouring stability, load-carrying capability and demanding off-road travel.
  • RITCHEY WCS Carbon BOOST Mountain → A carbon fork with a 502 mm axle-to-crown length and a 45 mm offset. It maintains virtually the same front-end height while providing slightly more stable handling, making it well suited to lightweight, performance-oriented builds.
  • SEIDO BPS → A 500 mm axle-to-crown steel expedition fork with a 51 mm offset. It most closely replicates the geometry specified by Ritchey while adding cargo mounts, low-rider compatibility and a high load capacity.

The best choice depends on the desired handling characteristics, the expected load and the intended front wheel configuration.
