Salsa Fargo Apex S1000 AXS Transmission 2026
A steel drop bar MTB for off-road bikepacking and loaded touring, equipped with electronic SRAM Eagle Transmission shifting.
Fargo Apex S1000 AXS: electronic shifting meets the drop bar MTB
The Salsa Fargo is a drop bar mountain bike designed to combine the multiple hand positions of drop handlebars with the stability, carrying capacity and tire clearance of a touring MTB. It is not a conventional gravel bike.
The Fargo Apex S1000 AXS Transmission 2026 combines a triple-butted CroMoly frame, Cutthroat Carbon Deluxe fork and wireless SRAM electronic shifting. It retains Fargo geometry, cargo mounts and adjustable Alternator dropouts: the shifting system changes, not the bike’s intended purpose.
SRAM Apex AXS / S1000 Eagle Transmission
The drivetrain combines wireless SRAM Apex AXS D1, a SRAM S1000 Eagle Transmission, a SRAM XS-1270 10–52t 12-speed cassette, an S1000 crankset with a 34t chainring and an Eagle 70 Transmission Flattop chain.
The system is designed for accurate shifts even while pedaling under load, a useful feature when climbing unpaved roads with luggage. The cassette provides a 520% gear range, from a low ratio of 34/52 to a high ratio of 34/10. Without a shift cable, there is no cable tension to adjust, although the chain, cassette and other components still require regular maintenance.
Electronic or mechanical shifting for remote travel?
Mechanical shifting requires no batteries and, in many situations, can be repaired more easily with commonly available tools. AXS offers precise electronic shifting, no shift cable and gear changes even under load.
On a journey, however, you need to plan battery management, charging or a spare battery, and consider the availability of replacement parts along your route. An electronic fault may be harder to resolve far from a suitably equipped workshop.
The right choice depends on the journey: on routes with regular charging opportunities, electronic shifting has tangible benefits; on highly remote expeditions, the simplicity of mechanical shifting may remain the priority.
CroMoly frame and Cutthroat Carbon Deluxe fork
The Fargo frame uses size-specific, seamless triple-butted CroMoly steel tubing. Its geometry, developed for off-road drop handlebars, provides predictable handling on mixed terrain, even with luggage.
The Salsa Cutthroat Carbon Deluxe carbon fork features abrasion-resistant plates in exposed areas, Three-Pack mounts on both legs, low-rider rack compatibility, Boost 15 × 110 mm thru-axle spacing, a 483 mm axle-to-crown length and 51 mm offset. The frame also accepts a compatible suspension fork with approximately 100 mm travel, within Salsa’s stated limits.
Alternator 1.0 Flat Mount, UDH and versatility
The Alternator 1.0 Flat Mount dropouts let you adjust the rear wheel position: forward for a shorter wheelbase and more agile handling, or rearward for increased stability and tire clearance. The driveside dropout is Salsa Alternator UDH, matching the stock Eagle Transmission drivetrain.
With the appropriate plates and components, the platform supports conventional derailleur drivetrains, singlespeed, Rohloff and Gates Belt Drive setups, as well as alternative rear axle standards of 142 mm thru-axle and 135 mm quick release using Alternator Reduction Plates. These are frame configuration options, not direct conversions of the stock AXS build.
Wheels, tires and cargo capacity
Salsa’s official build specifies WTB Sport Terra i30 da 29” wheels and Teravail Camrock 29 × 2.2” tires with Fast compound and tan sidewalls: Light Trail casing at the front and Durable casing at the rear.
The frame clears tires up to 29 × 3.0” in sizes S–XL and up to 29 × 2.6” in XS; 27.5+ and 26” configurations are also supported within the stated limits. For 27.5+ wheels, Salsa recommends 27.5 × 3.0” tires to preserve appropriate geometry: this is not the same as using standard 650B gravel wheels with narrow tires.
Rack, fender, bottle and accessory mounts support lightweight soft-bag setups or more substantial touring builds. The fork accepts compatible cargo cages and low-rider racks.
Who is it for?
Ideal for
Off-road bikepacking, forest tracks and extended unpaved routes
Multi-day trips with luggage distributed across the frame, fork and racks
Mountain routes with long climbs and low gearing
Riders seeking electronic shifting on a versatile touring platform
When it may not be the right choice
Lightweight performance gravel riding on fast dirt roads
Flat-bar mountain biking on aggressive trails
Touring predominantly on paved roads
Expeditions without charging opportunities where mechanical simplicity is paramount
Size guide
Fargo is designed around off-road drop handlebars. When choosing a size, consider your height, inseam, reach, stack, saddle height and preferred riding position.
Size
Salsa recommended rider height
XS
147–160 cm
S
157–170 cm
M
168–180 cm
L
178–191 cm
XL
188–201 cm
Where sizes overlap, Salsa suggests choosing the larger size for a roomier, more stable fit, or the smaller size for more nimble handling. The Salsa sizing guide can be supplemented with inseam or saddle-height measurements.
Bikejamming advice
We can help you choose a size and plan a setup suited to your intended route, including riding position, tires, load distribution, battery range and accessories.
Tell us about your plans and we’ll help you find the most suitable setup.
Not exactly. Fargo was designed as a drop bar mountain bike, with dedicated geometry, high-volume tires and cargo mounts. It is also intended for more demanding terrain than a conventional gravel bike.
Does the SRAM Apex S1000 AXS drivetrain use electronic shifting?
Shifting is electronic and wireless: SRAM Apex AXS D1 controls communicate with the SRAM S1000 Eagle Transmission rear derailleur. Power is still transmitted to the rear wheel through a chain.
Is it suitable for a journey lasting several weeks?
Yes. On longer trips with this drivetrain, however, you should plan battery life, charging and the availability of spare parts along your route.
What happens if the derailleur battery runs flat?
Electronic shifting cannot operate without power. For remote journeys, carrying a charged spare AXS battery or a compatible charging solution is advisable.
How does it differ from the Fargo GRX 610?
The Fargo GRX 610 uses a mechanical Shimano GRX 1×12 drivetrain with a 10–51t cassette. This version uses wireless electronic SRAM Eagle Transmission 1×12 with a 10–52t cassette and Alternator 1.0 Flat Mount dropouts with a UDH interface.
Can I fit 29+ tires?
Yes, sizes S–XL accept up to 29 × 3.0” tires. XS is limited to 29 × 2.6”; Salsa excludes 29+ on XS because of potential toe overlap.
Can I fit a suspension fork?
Yes, a compatible fork with approximately 100 mm travel. Salsa lists 506 mm axle-to-crown as the design measurement in the Frame Specs and up to 511 mm as the maximum in its FAQ. Always check the actual dimensions of the fork you intend to use.
Is Fargo compatible with Rohloff and Gates Belt Drive?
Yes, the frame supports alternative Rohloff, singlespeed and Gates Belt Drive configurations with the appropriate Alternator plates and components; these are not direct conversions of the stock AXS build.
Can I fit front and rear racks?
Yes. Salsa recommends the Alternator Plus Rack at the rear and the Salsa Down Under rack or compatible Three-Pack accessories on the fork.
