Real-World Positioning

Krampus occupies a unique position within the Surly range.

It is not a traditional touring bike and it was never intended to be a race-oriented mountain bike. It is a platform developed for riders who want to explore trails, remote routes and rough terrain while maintaining comfort, control and the ability to carry the equipment needed for several days of self-supported travel.

The large 29+ wheels allow riders to tackle roots, rock gardens, sand, loose surfaces and singletrack with a level of confidence that is difficult to replicate using more conventional configurations.

Why It Still Matters

Krampus was one of the bicycles that helped popularise the 29+ concept.

Even today it remains a particularly distinctive solution: the ability to combine the obstacle-clearing advantages of large-diameter wheels with the comfort and traction provided by high-volume tires.

In a market that increasingly pushes bicycles toward ever greater specialisation, Krampus continues to appeal to riders who value mechanical simplicity, durability and genuine trail enjoyment.

Frame and Platform

The frame is built from Surly Chromoly steel using Natch tubing and a double-butted main triangle.

The rigid steel fork preserves the original philosophy of the project, offering precision, durability and numerous mounting points for accessories and travel equipment.

The frame is also compatible with dropper posts and suspension forks up to 120 mm of travel, allowing the bike to adapt to very different riding styles and objectives.

The rear Gnot-Boost standard further expands drivetrain and wheel configuration possibilities.

29+: Why It Truly Changes the Ride

The 29 x 3.0" wheels are at the heart of the Krampus concept.

More than simply a tire size, the 29+ format fundamentally changes the way the bike behaves on difficult terrain.

The large air volume improves comfort, traction and the bike's ability to absorb trail impacts, while the large wheel diameter helps roll over obstacles, roots and rocks more effectively.

For riders who enjoy remote routes, singletrack and technical bikepacking, 29+ continues to offer characteristics that are difficult to replicate with more conventional setups.

Compatibility and Carrying Capacity

Despite its strong trail-riding focus, Krampus does not sacrifice versatility.

The frame includes mounts for racks, fenders and touring accessories, while the fork incorporates Three-Pack mounts that make it easy to increase carrying capacity.

This makes Krampus particularly appealing to riders who want to tackle multi-day technical routes while maintaining a relatively simple and reliable setup.

Krampus vs Karate Monkey

Krampus Karate Monkey
29+ wheels up to 29 x 3.0" More versatile wheel configurations
Greater traction and comfort on difficult terrain Closer to a traditional all-round MTB
Adventure trail riding Trail riding and broader MTB use
Technical bikepacking Versatile adventure and trail platform
Focused on control and stability Focused on versatility and adaptability

The choice largely depends on your preferred terrain and the type of experience you are looking for. Riders who prioritise remote trails, traction and the ability to tackle demanding terrain often find themselves drawn toward the Krampus.

Ideal For

  • Adventure trail riding
  • Technical bikepacking
  • Singletrack and remote routes
  • Rough terrain and low-traction surfaces
  • Exploration-focused off-road riding
  • Riders who appreciate the characteristics of 29+ wheels

When It Doesn't Make Sense

  • If most of your riding takes place on smooth gravel roads, fast gravel routes or long mixed-surface road rides.
  • If you prioritise efficiency and speed over traction, comfort and obstacle-clearing ability.
  • If your bikepacking mainly takes place on compact roads and relatively non-technical terrain.
  • If you are not interested in taking advantage of the potential of 29+ wheels and high-volume tires.
  • If you are looking primarily for a traditional touring platform or a bike focused on long-distance riding over predictable surfaces.

Size Guide

The manufacturer's recommendations should be considered only as a starting point. Height, inseam, body proportions, flexibility, preferred riding position and intended use can all significantly influence the final size choice.
