The Cutthroat for the explorer
The Salsa Cutthroat GRX 610 is probably the purest interpretation of the original idea behind the Cutthroat platform.
Born from the experience of the Tour Divide, one of the most demanding bikepacking races in the world, it combines speed, comfort and cargo capacity in a platform designed to cover thousands of kilometres across mixed terrain.
The carbon frame with Class 5 VRS technology, drop-bar mountain bike geometry and 29" wheels make it possible to tackle gravel roads, forest tracks, remote routes and long transfer sections while maintaining stable and predictable handling, even when fully loaded.
Unlike the electronic versions in the range, the GRX 610 focuses on simplicity, reliability and ease of maintenance. For many travellers and ultra-distance riders, it remains the most sensible option.
Born from the Tour Divide
The Cutthroat is neither a traditional gravel bike nor a mountain bike adapted to drop bars.
Salsa developed this platform by studying the needs of Tour Divide riders: extremely long consecutive days in the saddle, constantly changing terrain, complete self-sufficiency and the need to carry equipment without sacrificing pedalling efficiency.
The result is a bicycle that still occupies a category of its own: a drop-bar mountain bike specifically designed for endurance bikepacking.
Class 5 VRS and long-distance comfort
One of the defining characteristics of the Cutthroat is the Class 5 VRS (Vibration Reduction System).
The rear stays are engineered to absorb part of the vibration generated by gravel roads and rough terrain. It is not a suspension system, but a design solution that helps reduce fatigue accumulated during long hours of continuous riding.
Combined with 29 x 2.2" tyres and the platform's stable geometry, the result is a bicycle designed to maintain comfort and control even when the days in the saddle become exceptionally long.
Shimano GRX 1x12: simplicity and self-sufficiency
The Shimano GRX 610 1x12 drivetrain uses a 34-tooth Race Face crankset paired with a Shimano SLX 10-51 cassette.
The result is an exceptionally wide gear range suitable both for slow, fully loaded climbs and for faster sections on gravel roads and pavement.
For riders tackling long journeys or remote routes, a mechanical drivetrain still offers tangible advantages: straightforward maintenance, simple troubleshooting and easy access to Shimano spare parts almost anywhere in the world.
Cargo, bikepacking bags and off-road travel
The Cutthroat was designed to carry equipment without compromising the way the bike rides.
The frame provides generous space for large frame bags in every size, top-tube bag mounts, cargo mounts beneath the downtube and Three-Pack mounts on the fork.
Front and rear rack compatibility further expands its versatility, making it suitable both for lightweight bikepacking setups and for more equipment-intensive long-distance adventures.
Who we recommend it for
The Salsa Cutthroat GRX 610 is particularly well suited to:
long-distance bikepacking
endurance and ultra-distance events
routes such as the Tour Divide, Baja Divide and Tuscany Trail
off-road touring with a strong focus on unpaved surfaces
riders who prioritise reliability and mechanical simplicity
It is less performance-oriented than the Rival GX AXS and less technology-focused than the Apex AXS, but for many riders it represents the best balance between performance, reliability and ease of ownership.
The GRX 610 is the explorer's Cutthroat, but it is not the only interpretation of the platform.
Not in the traditional sense. The Cutthroat was developed as a drop-bar mountain bike and uses 29" wheels, high-volume tyres and geometry specifically designed for off-road bikepacking.
Is it suitable for bikepacking?
Yes. It was designed specifically for this purpose and includes numerous mounting points for bags, accessories and cargo systems.
Can I install a suspension fork?
Yes. The frame is compatible with 100 mm suspension forks with an axle-to-crown height of up to 506 mm.
What is the maximum tyre clearance?
The Cutthroat platform accommodates tyres up to 29 x 2.4" at the rear and up to 29 x 3.0" at the front.
Can I install a dropper post?
Yes. The frame includes internal routing for compatible dropper posts.
