Introduction

The Genesis Tour de Fer 40 is a touring bike designed to cover long distances with real luggage, without needing modifications.

Compared with the previous version, it introduces a new-generation Shimano CUES drivetrain, more durable and better suited to intensive use, while retaining a fully equipped configuration: dynamo lights, front and rear racks, and a Reynolds 725 steel frame.

It is a platform designed for riders who genuinely travel, where every component is chosen to keep working over time.

Performance and real-world use

The Tour de Fer 40 is designed for traditional long-distance cycle touring.

The long chainstay (465 mm) and stable geometry ensure control and predictability even when fully loaded, while the drop handlebar offers multiple hand positions, useful on extended trips.

It is a bike that prioritises pedalling continuity, stability, and load management rather than pure responsiveness.

Drivetrain upgrade: from Tiagra to CUES

The most relevant change concerns the drivetrain.

The previous version used Shimano Tiagra 2x10 with an 11–34T cassette. The new configuration introduces Shimano CUES 2x10 LINKGLIDE with an 11–39T cassette.

This brings three concrete advantages:

  • Greater long-term durability of drivetrain components
  • More stable shifting even under load
  • Wider gear range, useful on climbs with panniers

It is a genuine functional upgrade, designed for real travel use and not just for improvements on paper.

Shimano CUES LINKGLIDE technology is designed to increase the durability of wear-prone drivetrain components.

Compared with traditional drivetrains such as Tiagra, it uses:

  • thicker cassette teeth
  • optimised engagement profiles
  • shifting that is less “aggressive” but more progressive

The real-world result:

  • reduced chain and cassette wear
  • better function under load, such as climbing with panniers
  • longer maintenance intervals

In practical terms:
fewer replacements, fewer adjustments, and greater continuity while travelling

It is a drivetrain designed to be used for a long time, not to deliver “empty” performance.

Dynamo and autonomy

The Tour de Fer 40 is equipped with a Shimano dynamo hub and Busch & Müller lights.

The system provides constant lighting without batteries, making the bike independent even on long journeys.

The power of the front light allows riding even away from the tarmac or in low-visibility conditions.

Complete equipment for travel

The bike is ready to use from day one.

  • AVS-compatible rear rack
  • Front lowrider rack
  • Full provision for bags and accessories
  • Components chosen for reliability and ease of maintenance

No upgrades are required: the configuration is already designed for real travel.

Reviews and positioning

The Tour de Fer has been a reference point in the cycle touring world for years.

This configuration retains the original philosophy while introducing a more modern drivetrain better suited to intensive use, without altering the bike’s overall balance.

It is a choice focused on continuity and durability.

FAQ – Genesis Tour de Fer 40

What is the difference between the Tour de Fer 30 and 40?

The main difference lies in the drivetrain. The 40 introduces Shimano CUES with a wider gear range and greater durability than the 30’s configuration, while maintaining a complete touring setup.

Is the CUES drivetrain better than Tiagra?

For touring use, yes. It is designed to last longer and function better under load, which are essential qualities for travelling with panniers.

Is it suitable for long, self-supported trips?

Yes. Thanks to the dynamo, racks, and reliable drivetrain, it is designed to handle long itineraries without modification.

Is it also suitable for everyday use?

Yes, but it is built for travel. It can also be used in the city, but it performs best over long distances.

Do I need to modify anything before setting off?

No. It is already complete and ready for cycle touring.
