Recap

Reynolds 725 steel platform with Shimano GRX 2×10 drivetrain and hydraulic brakes, built around a thru-axle configuration.

The Croix de Fer 30 is oriented toward gravel use on mixed routes, with wide gear management and balanced behaviour between tarmac and dirt.

Positioning and use logic

The Croix de Fer 30 represents the balance point within the range: it retains the full structure of the platform (Reynolds 725, thru-axle standards, hydraulic braking), but with a configuration that prioritises real-world versatility and broad gear management.

The 2x drivetrain clearly defines its intended use. Compared to a single-chainring setup, the priority here is continuity across different surfaces: tarmac, gravel roads, and compact dirt, with changes in pace and gradient that require a more articulated gear range.

It is a bike that makes sense for riders who do not want to over-specialise their use case: it covers long routes, extended commuting, classic gravel riding, and light bikepacking, while maintaining stable and predictable handling.

It is not designed for aggressively technical dirt use, nor for a purely road-focused interpretation: it is an intermediate platform in the most concrete sense of the term.

Frame and platform

The Reynolds 725 frame defines the bike’s behaviour: durable structure, strong vibration damping, and progressive response under load. It is a platform that performs well over long distances and on surfaces that are not perfectly smooth.

The Amplitude G100 chromoly fork maintains a design logic consistent with the frame: robust, linear in response, and suited to continuous use across mixed surfaces.

The thru-axle standards (12x100 / 12x142) place the platform within a more modern and stable interpretation, especially when carrying load or riding on broken terrain.

The presence of configurable internal cable routing and accessory mounts (racks, mudguards, dynamic setups) confirms the model’s nature: a solid base to build around according to real-world use.

Build and technical choices

The Shimano GRX RX600/RX400 2×10 drivetrain with 46/30T crankset and 11-34T cassette is a configuration designed to cover different scenarios without over-specialisation. It offers broad gear management, useful both on tarmac and on dirt, without moving into the more extreme logic of modern wide-range setups.

The Shimano GRX RX400 hydraulic braking system with 160 mm rotors guarantees progressive and consistent braking, suited to continuous use and variable conditions.

The Amplitude G100 wheels with Center-Lock interface and thru-axles fit into a modern and solid platform. The 26 mm internal width works effectively with 45 mm tyres, contributing to stability and comfort across mixed routes.

Wheels and tyres / compatibility

The bike is equipped with Maxxis Rambler 700x45 mm tubeless-ready tyres on pre-taped rims, with valves included. It is a configuration aligned with real-world use: efficient on tarmac, but with enough volume to handle gravel and variable surfaces.

The tubeless setup is an integral part of the platform, especially for riders using the bike over long distances or on irregular terrain.

When it makes sense

  • For mixed routes with a real alternation between tarmac and dirt.
  • For riders wanting full gear management without excessive complexity.
  • For continuous use: extended commuting, long rides, and light bikepacking.

When it does NOT make sense

  • It is not the ideal choice for riders looking for a more direct 1x drivetrain approach on technical dirt.
  • It is not oriented toward exclusively road use with a priority on pure speed.
  • It is not designed for extreme off-road setups with much wider tyres.

Genesis Croix de Fer 30 FAQ

Is the 2x drivetrain better suited than a single-chainring setup?

It depends on the intended use. On mixed routes with changes in pace and surface, a 2x setup allows for more precise gear management. On technical dirt and more direct riding, a single-chainring drivetrain can feel more immediate.

Is it suitable for bikepacking?

Yes, especially in light or medium configurations. The platform supports luggage and accessories while maintaining good pedalling continuity across mixed routes.

Is it more of a road bike or more off-road?

It is a balanced platform. It works well on tarmac, but performs best on mixed routes where terrain variety requires adaptability more than specialisation.
