Steel all-road touring bike designed for riders who combine secondary roads, European cycle routes, rough pavement and light gravel. The triple-butted CroMoly Vaya frame, Waxwing fork and Shimano GRX 2x11 drivetrain deliver comfort, stability and reliability for long-distance rides, lightweight touring and everyday exploration. An ideal platform for EuroVelo routes, multi-day trips and mixed-surface journeys where smooth tarmac often gives way to gravel roads and quiet backcountry tracks.

The Salsa that anticipated modern all-road riding
When most bicycles were still rigidly divided between road bikes, trekking bikes and mountain bikes, Salsa envisioned a platform capable of moving naturally between pavement, secondary roads and light gravel.
The Vaya was born from exactly this idea.
It is not a gravel race bike, not a traditional touring bike and not a mountain bike with drop bars. It is one of the earliest modern interpretations of all-road touring: a bicycle designed to cover long distances across different surfaces while maintaining comfort, stability and practicality.
That is why the Vaya still retains a distinct identity today.
Riders planning European cycle routes, quiet backroads, lightweight touring, advanced commuting or itineraries where pavement frequently gives way to well-maintained gravel roads will still find the Vaya an exceptionally coherent platform.
Who the Vaya GRX 600 is for
The Vaya GRX 600 is particularly well suited to riders looking for:
cycle routes and long-distance touring
EuroVelo routes and mixed-surface European travel
long-distance commuting
all-road rides on pavement and light gravel
light touring with bags and racks
a stable bike that still feels efficient
It is not designed for technical singletrack, extreme bikepacking or particularly demanding off-road terrain. In those situations, Fargo and Cutthroat are generally more specialised choices.
Steel frame and distance-oriented geometry
The Vaya frame uses triple-butted Salsa Kung Fu CroMoly tubing.
The goal is not maximum stiffness but a smooth and predictable ride over many consecutive hours in the saddle.
The geometry prioritises stability with light to moderate loads while maintaining good efficiency when speeds increase or surfaces become rougher.
Generous tyre clearance allows tyres up to 700x45 mm without fenders or 700x38 mm with fenders installed.
Waxwing fork: the most underrated part of the Vaya
The Salsa Waxwing fork is one of the most interesting elements of the project.
The carbon fork with aluminium steerer integrates:
Three-Pack mounts
low-rider rack compatibility
internal dynamo hub cable routing
fender mounts
This makes it possible to configure the bike both for everyday riding and for multi-day travel without relying on improvised solutions.
Shimano GRX 600 2x11
The Shimano GRX 600 2x11 drivetrain with a 46/30 crankset and 11–34 cassette provides gearing suitable for:
long road transfers
climbing with light luggage
mixed-surface routes
It is a configuration that prioritises versatility and simplicity rather than the more specialised requirements of aggressive off-road riding.
A platform that still makes sense for modern touring
Although sold as a complete bike, the Vaya retains a strong touring-platform mentality.
The numerous mounting points allow the use of:
bikepacking bags
traditional racks
fenders
dynamo hubs
commuting-oriented configurations
It is one of the few modern bicycles that still moves naturally between daily transportation and travel.

FAQ
Is the Salsa Vaya a gravel bike?
Partly, yes, but its identity is closer to that of an all-road touring bike. It is designed for long distances on pavement, secondary roads and light gravel, with a strong focus on comfort and carrying capacity.
Can I fit racks and fenders?
Yes. Both the frame and fork are designed to accept racks and fenders.
Is it compatible with a dynamo hub?
Yes. The Waxwing fork includes internal routing for dynamo hub wiring.
What is the maximum tyre clearance?
Up to 700x45 mm without fenders or 700x38 mm with fenders installed.
Is it suitable for heavily off-road touring?
For demanding gravel, rough tracks and technical terrain, the Fargo is generally the more appropriate choice. The Vaya is optimised for mixed surfaces and travel on secondary roads.
