Recap

Top-tier model in the Croix de Fer range, featuring a Reynolds 725 steel frame, carbon fork, Shimano GRX RX820 2×12 drivetrain, and hydraulic brakes.

It is the most complete version of the platform for riders spending many hours in the saddle, across tarmac and gravel, with a setup suited to distance, bikepacking, and sustained real-world use.

Positioning and use logic

The Croix de Fer 50 is the most complete and most up-to-date interpretation of the Croix de Fer platform. The underlying philosophy of the model does not change — a steel bike for mixed-surface riding, capable of carrying load and maintaining consistent performance across different terrain — but it develops that concept through more advanced components and a lighter, more refined platform.

It makes sense for riders covering long distances, alternating between tarmac, gravel roads, and regular dirt tracks, and wanting a bike that can support extended use without moving into the logic of a pure specialist machine. It is a gravel bike oriented toward distance and bikepacking, not a technical off-road bike and not a platform designed with road speed as its sole priority.

Frame and platform

The frame is built from Reynolds 725 steel tubing, the defining element of the top-tier Croix de Fer. The platform retains the characteristic response of the family: stable structure, predictable handling, strong vibration damping, and genuine load-carrying capability.

The defining update in this configuration is the Amplitude G200 carbon fork. The benefit here is not limited to weight reduction, but also reflects a more modern reading of the platform: greater front-end precision, integrated cable routing, and mounting provision that is useful for riders setting the bike up for long-distance use, including with a dynamo system or distributed loads.

The presence of front and rear thru-axles, rack and mudguard mounts, a third bottle mount, and fork mounts for Anything Cages makes the bike’s intended purpose very clear: not “generic gravel”, but a mixed-terrain distance bike built to be configured seriously.

Build and technical choices

The Shimano GRX RX820 2×12 drivetrain with 46/30T crankset and 11-36T cassette is one of the key elements of the model. It is not a choice built around extreme off-road riding, but around broad and controlled gear management in real-world contexts: fast road transfers, mixed sections, climbs with light or medium loads, and pace changes over long distances.

The Shimano GRX RX820 hydraulic braking system with 160 mm front and rear rotors follows the same logic: consistent, modulated braking better suited to ongoing use, even in variable conditions or with a fully equipped bike.

The Amplitude G100 wheelset with Center-Lock rotor interface and 12x100 / 12x142 axle standards defines an updated platform aligned with the level of the build. The 26 mm internal rim width works well with the stock Maxxis Rambler 700x45 mm tubeless-ready tyres, helping give the bike a practical mixed-terrain character: fast-rolling where needed, yet with the support and comfort required when the surface opens up.

Wheels and tyres / compatibility

The Croix de Fer 50 comes standard with Maxxis Rambler 700x45 mm tubeless-ready tyres on pre-taped Amplitude G100 rims, with tubeless valves included. The configuration is coherent with the bike’s real-world use: long distances, mixed terrain, variable surfaces, and the need to maintain comfort and traction without making the bike feel overly heavy or dull.

The carbon fork remains compatible with tyres up to 47 mm, a useful figure because it clarifies the platform’s margin without pushing it beyond its intended logic. This remains a gravel bike focused on distance and fast bikepacking, not a drop-bar MTB.

When it makes sense

  • For long rides on tarmac and gravel roads, where sustained performance and a sustainable riding position matter.
  • For performance-oriented bikepacking on mixed routes, with light or medium loads distributed rationally.
  • For riders looking for a Croix de Fer to use extensively, with a more advanced platform in terms of drivetrain, braking, and construction standards.

When it does NOT make sense

  • It is not the right choice for riders looking for a technical off-road bike with an aggressive setup and much wider tyres.
  • It is not the right choice for riders using the bike almost exclusively on tarmac with a clear priority on road performance.
  • It is not the right choice for those who simply want to enter the Croix de Fer platform without interest in a high-end build.

Genesis Croix de Fer 50 FAQ

Is the Croix de Fer 50 suitable for bikepacking?

Yes. It is one of the strongest interpretations of the Croix de Fer platform for bikepacking use: the Reynolds 725 frame, carbon fork with additional mounts, 2x12 drivetrain, and thru-axle standards make it well suited to long routes with an equipped setup.

Is the Genesis Croix de Fer 50 a true gravel bike or a touring bike?

It is a gravel bike oriented toward distance and light-to-medium loads. It is not a classic touring bike in the traditional sense, but a platform capable of covering long mixed-surface routes with a more dynamic and modern interpretation.

Does the carbon fork really change the bike’s behaviour?

Yes, but it does not turn the bike into a nervous or specialist machine. It lightens the platform, makes the front end cleaner and more precise, and adds a more advanced interpretation of the model, especially for long-distance riding and carefully configured setups.
