Recap

The flagship model in the Croix de Fer range, with a Reynolds 725 steel frame, newly designed Genesis Carbon fork, Shimano GRX RX820 2×12 drivetrain and hydraulic disc brakes.

It is the most complete configuration of the platform for riders who spend many hours on the bike, across tarmac and gravel, with a setup suited to distance, bikepacking and regular use. The updated model introduces increased tyre clearance, dynamo routing through the fork and availability in five sizes, from XS to XL.

Positioning and intended use

The Croix de Fer 50 represents the most complete interpretation of the Croix de Fer platform: a steel bike for mixed-surface routes, designed to maintain consistent performance across tarmac, dirt roads and regular gravel.

It makes sense for riders who spend long hours in the saddle and want a stable, reliable and well-equipped gravel bike, without moving into the logic of a pure specialist bike. It is a distance and bikepacking-oriented gravel bike, not a technical off-road bike and not a platform designed only for speed on tarmac.

Frame and platform

The frame is built from Reynolds 725 steel tubing, the material defining the highest level of the Croix de Fer family. The platform remains stable, predictable and suitable for real-world long-distance use.

The updated Genesis Carbon fork introduces greater tyre clearance and internal dynamo routing. The 410 mm axle-to-crown measurement, with a 50 mm offset, keeps the bike coherent with a distance-focused gravel and all-road platform.

The presence of 12×100 mm front and 12×142 mm rear thru-axles, rack and mudguard mounts, luggage compatibility and accessory mounts clearly defines the purpose of the bike: not a generic gravel bike, but a serious configurable mixed-distance platform.

Build and technical choices

The Shimano GRX RX820 2×12 drivetrain, with Shimano GRX RX610 46/30T chainset and Shimano HG710 11-36T cassette, is one of the key elements of the model. It offers gearing suitable for transfers, climbs, mixed routes and light to medium bikepacking.

The Shimano GRX BR-RX820 hydraulic braking system, with 160 mm front and rear rotors, is coherent with regular use, including luggage and variable conditions.

The Amplitude G-100 wheels, with 622×26 rims, Center Lock hubs and double butted spokes, work with Maxxis Rambler 700×45c tubeless ready tyres. It is a setup focused on comfort, traction and rolling efficiency across mixed surfaces.

Wheels and tyres / compatibility

The Croix de Fer 50 comes fitted with Maxxis Rambler 700×45c tubeless ready tyres on Amplitude G-100 tubeless compatible rims. Tubeless tape is already installed and tubeless valves are included.

The declared maximum tyre clearance is 47 mm. This margin confirms the bike’s intended use: long-distance gravel, mixed routes and fast bikepacking, not drop-bar MTB.

When it makes sense

  • For long rides on tarmac, dirt roads and regular gravel.
  • For sporty bikepacking with light or medium luggage.
  • For riders looking for a Croix de Fer with GRX 2×12, hydraulic brakes and a Reynolds 725 frame.
  • For riders wanting an evolved steel gravel bike that is stable and usable all year round.

When it does NOT make sense

  • It is not the right choice for technical off-road riding, trail use or significantly wider tyres.
  • It is not the right choice for riders using the bike almost exclusively on tarmac with maximum road performance as the priority.
  • It is not the most rational choice if you are simply looking for the first entry point into the Croix de Fer platform.

Size guide

  • XS: generally for shorter riders or those needing a compact reach.
  • S: approximately 164–172 cm.
  • M: approximately 172–180 cm.
  • L: approximately 178–186 cm.
  • XL: generally for taller riders or those needing more reach.

Genesis Croix de Fer 50 FAQ

Is the Croix de Fer 50 suitable for bikepacking?

Yes. It is one of the most complete Croix de Fer builds for light to medium bikepacking: Reynolds 725 frame, carbon fork with additional mounts, GRX 2×12 and thru-axle standards make it suitable for long mixed-surface routes.

Is it a gravel bike or a touring bike?

It is a distance-oriented gravel bike with a strong focus on light touring and bikepacking. It does not replace a pure expedition bike, but it performs very well on long rides across tarmac, dirt roads and regular gravel.

What tyres does it come with, and what is the maximum clearance?

It comes with Maxxis Rambler 700×45c tubeless ready tyres. Declared maximum clearance is 47 mm.

Is the fork dynamo-ready?

Yes. The new Genesis Carbon fork includes dynamo routing, useful for long-distance and regular-use setups.

Is the GRX 2×12 drivetrain suitable for touring?

Yes. The 46/30T chainset combined with an 11-36T cassette offers versatile gearing for mixed routes, transfers and climbing with light to medium luggage.
