Ultralight bikepacking handlebar system: control and stability
The Revelate Designs Pronghorn Handlebar Bag is a front load system designed for riders looking for maximum stability and responsive handling, even on technical terrain.
It is not a classic handlebar bag: it is a solution designed to keep the steering light and precise, avoiding the typical “pendulum” effect of bulky front loads.
It is the reference system for:
technical bikepacking
ultra-distance
advanced MTB and gravel riding
To understand how to distribute front load correctly, you can also consult the guide Front load on touring bikes.
Agility without compromise: why it changes the ride
The key point of the Pronghorn is weight management on the handlebar.
Unlike traditional bags:
the load stays compact
it does not move laterally
it does not negatively affect steering
Result: the bike remains responsive, precise and controllable, even on singletrack or gravel.
This is why it is used in:
ultra-distance races
fast bikepacking
travel on technical terrain
Internal structure: consistent stability
The system uses a holster with an internal fibreglass reinforcement.
This structure:
maintains the shape of the bag
prevents sagging towards the wheel
stabilises the load even on rough terrain
A concrete difference compared to soft systems.
Cam-Lock mounting system
The Pronghorn uses straps with cam buckles integrated into the mounting system.
Advantages:
secure tightening
no loosening during use
even load distribution
Once secured, the bag remains stable even on technical routes.
Technical dry bag: lightweight and waterproof
The internal bag is made from Challenge Ultra 200 UHMWPE:
extremely lightweight
waterproof
abrasion-resistant
Features:
roll-top closure on both sides
easy access
taped seams
To maintain waterproofing, the ends must be rolled at least three times.
Modular system and accessories
removable pocket clips for additional load
dual closure system
separate holster + dry bag structure
allows the setup to be adapted according to the trip.
Size guide
S (7.5 L)
ultralight setups
races and minimalist travel
also suitable for gravel
M (11 L)
the most versatile
balance between volume and stability
ideal for most trips
L (23 L)
bulky loads (e.g. winter gear)
requires adequate space
designed for MTB and expedition setups
Compatibility and required clearance
The Pronghorn requires adequate clearance between the handlebar and front wheel.
Before purchase:
check the available clearance
consider possible fork compression (MTB)
assess the bulk of the bag when fully loaded
In compact setups, it is advisable to choose smaller sizes.
Note on the Large size
The L size is very bulky:
it may be cumbersome on some bikes
on drop bars it may interfere with levers and controls
on MTBs it is essential to check the clearance even with the fork compressed
Recommended for specific uses and setups with plenty of space.
